Merry Christmas!

Amelia helped decorate the tree, Matteo helped string up the patio lights.  It was a fabulous noche buena feast of tinola, queso de bola, sapin-sapin and lumpia.

Overall, a great start to the Christmas Season.  Annual mochi making at Taeko’s tomorrow and M3 arrives from Philadelphia!  Friends, family, food – what else could one ask for at Christmas time?

But I did have a very moving moment earlier at the nursing home.  After we had served lunch, sang some carols and handed out gift bags, one woman asked me to help her get into the elevator. As I wheel her into her room, wish her a Merry Christmas and turn away, she reaches for my forearm and says, “Your hands are the hands of Jesus. Thank you and God bless. Please come see me tomorrow.”

I was shocked for two reasons – first, it was the clearest thing she had said all day.  I was having a hard time understanding her all afternoon.  She had asked for more cider, assistance with her shoe that kept coming off, we even went to the third floor because I thought that’s what she said when we first got in the elevator, just to be told by staff on that floor that she belonged on the second floor.  So the sudden clarity and lucidity of her words took me by surprise.

Secondly, because the priest at last night’s vigil specifically quoted Theresa of Avila in his sermon:

Christ has no body but yours,
No hands, no feet on earth but yours,
Yours are the eyes with which he looks
Compassion on this world,
Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good,
Yours are the hands, with which he blesses all the world.
Yours are the hands, yours are the feet,
Yours are the eyes, you are his body.
Christ has no body now but yours,
No hands, no feet on earth but yours,
Yours are the eyes with which he looks
compassion on this world.
Christ has no body now on earth but yours.

Mercy brings us and everyone around us joy.  So I guess that’s the real meaning of Christmas.

Happy Holidays!
